Fall Gardening

This bed was prepped with a some raised bed soil, fertilized, compost and topped with worm compost.

These seedling were sown on August 26th.  They are a mesclun mix. Beautiful mix of colors too.  The seed packet called, "sassy salad mix" from Botanical Interest.  21-58 days.

They no longer show this particular mix on their webpage but they do have other blends.  Mesclun Lettuce.     I highly recommend their seeds. 

This past week we had beautiful fall like weather but next week, we will be back up into the high 90's. I will be using a shade cloth to protect them.  

 

Borage is a plant that you only need to sow once in your garden, it will reseed everywhere.   It is great for attracting bees.

My second round of zinnias. They just started to bloom this week.

I have sunflowers that are starting to open up too.  I will be posted photos of them soon. 
 

Corn Update - July 2020

I'm amazed on how tall the stalks are and I see at least a dozen ears of corn.  Yay!

Burpee seeds - Sweet corn "Bi-licious Hybrid"

75-80 days to harvest.

I'm looking at mid to late august for some ripe corn.  

I have only two good bushes of the French Mascotte bush beans.

So far, they have been good producers of beans.

I will sow more in late summer.

I added these to a stir fry.  I blanched and gave them a quick shock in ice water prior.  

They have a nice sweet taste. I could have eaten them all.

May Garden Bursting with Color, Zone 10

A lot of photos to share, but I hope you will enjoy them.

 We start off with some beautiful visitors.  It is fun to watch them flutter around the my little garden patch.

 Last of the Tonda di Parigi, carrots.  I will sow more in late summer.  A favorite to grow.  Opie likes them too.  Seeds from Botanical Interests.

A container of Swiss Chard, nasturtiums and bush beans.  Lets see how this turns out. Love to experiment with containers. 

 My latest bouquet filled with a little bit of everything. Sweet Surender rose, Sweet Williams, larkspurs and yarrow.

Gardening in June

Wow, where do I begin?  The garden is finally starting to take off and so far so good.

It is the first time growing bush beans.  I did plant a lot of them and I'm glad I did.  I have grown the long beans before and they did very well in my garden. But I thought I would give the bush bean a try.  I will let you know at the end of the season.  But what I have picked so far have been very tasty.  I hope they will continue to produce.

 These bright beauties are the "come back kid" in my garden.  These are "Cosmo bright lights" that I started from seed a long while ago.  The self sow themselves over and over again and they do well in poor soil.   I have a small area in my yard that has very sand soil and they to do very well.  There are a lot of baby plants right now and I have transferred a few around the bush beans.  Bees love them and the finches love the seeds the flower produces.   Seed packet came from Botanical Interests.

This is one of the babies.  They do grow tall and bush out.

Once again I am growing the cutest and tastiest (in my opinion) cucumber, Lemon.  Seeds from Botanical Interest.

 The weight on this one was 170g

I plan to sow a few more seeds.

 Deadheading the Cosmos I came across a Monarch chrysalis.  It looks heathy. I will keep checking on it.

 It blends in so well amongst the foliages of the cosmos

If all goes well, it will emerge into the world surrounded by beautiful colors.
